This is Barnaby the Bear. I’m adding him to Tomversation soon. I have been wanting to add a bear, I like the lumbering size and the way it fits in the panels, or doesn’t fit, and I like the look of him. I also wanted to do some strips regarding the greenhouse effect and the gradual loss of his habitat. He’s a polar bear.
I couldn’t think of a name at first, usually when I design a character, the name comes right to me without me even thinking, but this took some time. I had asked for names on social media and I got some good names. One I liked was Lusi, which I am told means white, which of course is perfect for a polar bear. But I ended up with Barnaby because I thought it was funny. I wasn’t trying to find a “B” name to go with bear, I just ended up with it after trying so many others out. He just looks like a Barnaby.
Years ago, when I was a kid, we had a next door neighbor with a dog named Richard. I thought it was so funny when she would call out her door for the dog, calling, “Richard! Richard!”
I really like him, I hope you do, too. Stick around because I’ll be introducing him to the other characters soon. I’m still working on his personality, but after a strip or two I can easily nail it down.
